Ma & Pa RR Walk: Pleasantville Rd to Laurel Brook Road (2022 Remaster)
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
Newly remastered! A great walk along an interesting section of the famous Maryland & Pennsylvania RR through Maryland's Little Gunpowder Falls valley. Unlike the original upload-which was in two parts-this remaster has both parts combined for your viewing pleasure. Quite a bit smoother than the original though an occasional "kink" still shows. We begin at the Pleasantville Road end (classic pix...

Well, almost new anyway... Here's a sample of a remastered upload from June 2009 of a hike along the abandoned Ma & Pa RR through the Little Gunpowder Falls valley straddling Baltimore and Harford Counties in Maryland. Picture and sound quite a bit better (as you'll see here) and-unlike the 2013 original post which was actually uploaded in two parts-the remaster will be both parts together for ...

No biggie...just the aftermath of a fire in the hood. At first it was suspected there was a fatality but later determined there wasn't...at least as far as I know anyway. As long as I have the attention of my legion of fans who may be pondering my seeming inactivity-it's been a weird year (to say the least) with my extra back pain, the price of gas, and the still-very-omnipresent corona virus. ...

    Would’ve been cool in my opinion if there was video or picture of BEDT 15 when it arrived on strasburg property for the first time the month before this was recorded. And before the engine became today’s working thomas replica. Not that it’s too big of a deal but it would’ve been interesting.

    Didn't the Orioles win in 1970 as well? I'm not from Baltimore but always loved the Memorial on the stadium. That typeface/font is beautiful. I'm sure it has a name, but I don't know it.

      The Orioles may have won in 1970 as well but I really can't remember! Guess I'm getting rusty in my old age! As far as the font goes I tried looking through the fonts I have. A few come close but still don't quite match up. Best I can describe it is some kind of art deco (which I've always been a fan of).

      @@bullfrog1954 Thank you for your reply. They did win it in 1970; they beat the Reds in 5 games. I agree with your describing that beautiful font as "art deco" as that was the first style that came to my mind. Am I right that the memorial was demolished with the rest of the stadium? If so, that is shameful.

    • @bullfrog1954

      @@anrun Unfortunately, you're right...the facade was demolished despite "promises" to keep it intact. Best of my knowledge the only thing "saved" was home plate which was installed at Camden Yards at its original opening but something tells me it's been long replaced. The seats at Memorial Stadium were sold off; assuming the buyers still have them that's all that's left from Memorial. Thanx for viewing and commenting.

      @@bullfrog1954 Thank you as well. I'm not sure any memorial should be demolished unless there really is no other option. Surely, some place in the greater Baltimore area could have been found to house and display such a beautiful memorial. Again, shameful.

      I was doing relatively fine until a slip-and-fall in May 1998 forced my retirement in July 1999. I managed to survive two close brushes with death before that but it was that fall that changed everything! Got OK enough to do some biking but the back pain again increased due to another slipped disc (first one in 1990) requiring surgery...immediately after which I had my third close brush with death-cardiac arrest! After recovery tried getting back into the swing of things including making the videos I'd go on to post. Did OK until all the recent happenings; one of which was turning 70. That's what makes all this so frustrating-doing pretty-much OK until recently!! Hope your arthritis isn't getting you down. I've been dealing with that myself for decades now. I know how you feel-believe me! Anyway-good health to us both! Glad to hear from you! Hope you'll stop by again soon! BTW Had an uncle in Sydney till he passed in the late 90s. Had an "Aussie" connection myself! Peace and Good Cheer to you...✌👍👌

    Thanks for posting these! My family lives not far from the location. The WV Northern was completely standalone out of Kingwood WV with one interchange (B&O) at Tunnelton to the south. It operated as a coal hauler primarily from 1888-1991 serving up to a dozen substantial mines until its last customers shuttered for good. In its last years it operated a handful of SW1200 and NW2 locomotives, two which were later repurposed on the tourist line (depicted) from 1994-99 until debts and the town of Kingwood put them out of business for good. As part of the debt repayment all of the physical remnants of the line were sold off and/or scrapped by the early 2000s. Virtually nothing of the RR itself or any of the mines remains (except the ROW itself and some detention ponds), but ROW is being revived again as the WV Northern rail trail, with the first section (crushed limestone) having been completed from Kingwood Yard (now a lot and park) to Snider. The entire ROW is walkable / bikeable as far as I know. An interesting feature between Snider and Irona is a switchback to gain elevation to the Howesville area (shown). Even with 3-4 locos I couldn’t imagine trains on this line were all that long, considering the switchbacks and steep grades. Pretty neat and historical line, though! For more info see: www.american-rails.com/wvn.html

      I'm familiar with most of the history of the WVNRR, and apparently I'm very fortunate to have gotten to ride it in May 1996 considering what's happened since! That was a great ride as I got to operate the switcher en route back to Kingwood and we even covered the rare mileage into downtown Kingwood not having been traveled in a while! As this was a private fantrip we had control of the train...literally. Our train negotiated the switchback rather well; only other switchbacks I've seen were at Cass. A revisit to the Tunnelton area in May 2013 showed a really sad sight (to us, anyway)...track pulled up and ROW growing over!I'm familiar with most of the history of the WVNRR, and apparently I'm very fortunate to have gotten to ride it in May 1996 considering what's happened since! The large building along Commerce St. was once a large feed mill. The smaller was not the freight station. The freight station was on the opposite side of the track, behind the Miss Oxford Diner. It burned down in 1988/89. East Penn owns the track to the state line. Cecil County owns the track in Md. It's still there in spots, some bridges were removed and torn out on the north side of Rising Sun.

      Back in 1982 during a visit to Strasburg in one of the shops I found a driving tour of the LOS. It was just several 8 1/2x11 pages of maps and text bound inside a clear plastic "binder." Caught my attention as that was about the time I became really interested in the LOS having first heard of it in Hilton's Ma & Pa book. Can't remember who put it together (would've had to have been either Ben Kline or Bill Modinger) but it was set up as a circuitous route so one could begin the "tour" at any point on the line and automatically return to their starting point. It even had some points only reachable by "public" farm roads (which I did use without incident) but the tour took my by points I might not have ordinarily seen! Included everything-even the Quarryville branch! Very comprehensive! Problem is...I can't find it!! Right about now I could use it!! If I come across it I'll let you know! I still recommend Ben Kline's Little, Old, and Slow. Great history of the line!

    LO&S ran west to Peach Bottom, with a branch to Quarryville. It never went to Lancaster.

    • @bullfrog1954
      @bullfrog1954 17 дней назад

      Having read both Benjamin Kline's and George Hilton's books on this it seems the name came from intent (or wishful thinking) after its morph from the Peach Bottom Ry. Several subsequent incidents occurred which they hoped to take advantage of, like the Lancaster & Reading Narrow Gauge RR (only a name; standard gauge from the start) building from Quarryville to Lancaster and B&O extending its Childs line beyond Singerly into Lancaster County utilizing the LOS Quarryville line to reach the LRNG. When the Penn found out about B&O's plans to enter Lancaster County they bought the LRNG thereby blowing the B&O's plans, along with LOS plans to standard-gauge. The beginning of the end for the LOS.

    • @660Oliver
      @660Oliver 17 дней назад

      @@bullfrog1954 The Peach Bottom RWY was when it was the Eastern Division of a planned narrow gauge network in South Central Pa. When this failed, It became the LO&S, the wester part became the Ma & Pa. The RDG initially leased the Quarryville Branch, for about 10 years. The B&O built from Childs, Md. to a point just north of Providence Mills. A financial panic ended construction and subsequent plans to build to Oxford. Reading gave up the lease, and the PRR took it over.

    There are parts i just dont remember. Been a subscriber for years. Seen Dolly & you once in a store. You were busy with your many fans. Maybe next time i can get a picture & autographs with you?

      There may be parts you don't remember as I added some bonus footage not in the original; something I do when I remaster retrospectives. If you've seen us in some store it would for sure have been a while as we haven't been anywhere in about three years. Don't recall "many fans" nor being "busy"...not quite that famous yet. Nice thought though! Maybe one day...

      Your right Gus. Been at least 3 to 4 years ago. There was 3-4 people around you & Dolly. They were quite enthused to meet you & asking about your travel videos. Did not feel right about intervening. Waited awhile then had to leave. Your just so modest & quite a popular well known couple. Next time your not getting away from me.

      Gus you just don't realize how many people follow you. When your out in public your sure to get recognized. Most will respect your privacy. Please never think your a unknown & not to bother with as if your not worthy. Not true at all. You & Dolly are celebrities.

      Been thinking and can't help asking...where did you allegedly see me as you describe?? I have no recollections of being anyplace where I had people around me asking about travel videos, or anything! If I was actually there and you were close enough to have heard what was being said why didn't you come up to me yourself? I'd have been happy to give you an autograph or even a selfie! Honestly I can't remember anything like that! I've occasionally had people recognize me and come up to me asking if I'm the bullfrog! Fellow railfans would spot me while I'm trackside and introduce themselves. If ever you see me feel free to come up and say hello!

Interesting you mentioning my dry humor...just realized how long I've actually been doing that-someone first told me that back in 1986! Apparently I had more practice than I thought...

      @bullfrog1954 At our age we just enjoy each day and those that's around us to share them! Just really great looking back on those nice long Sunday back seat rides throughout Maryland and surrounding states learning and seeing history. Take care my friend!

      You're certainly right, Lynn! Hope to get out again, but even back in the day when we started doing this sort-of thing I knew there'd come a day when we wouldn't be able to do this any more! Don't know why but something told me, for whatever reason, we'd have to stop. As a result we tried to get out as often as we could, carrying it into the present day...for over 40 years. I have movies of drives in the 70s and 80s I'd love to share with viewers! You'd be surprised what's in the archives! Those old films are like time capsules! All in excellent shape too; most with sound! Even covered rock concerts! Got all kinds of bands!! Just got to get these films digitized for my viewers! If I can't get out for a while, got LOTS of first-time stuff to share with my viewers! You take care too, Lynn! 😊🧡

    It is still Robert E Lee Park no matter what the politically stupid say.

    • @bullfrog1954
      @bullfrog1954 2 месяца назад

      I still refer to it as REL Park just out of longtime habit! Political correctness?? It's strangling us! I know a lady who did some research on this. Yes-Robert E. Lee was a southern general, but unlike some others, NEVER had slaves! Not only that, but he and his wife would often take in black children of slaves and educate them; presumably to prepare them for the inevitable ("possible" end of slavery, or just because Lee & wife believed these children deserved an education) or whatever. Most of our first 15 presidents owned slaves! Do we just write them out of history?? Anyone able to answer that?? 👍👍✌ Peace...

    When SEPTA extends the Media Wawa line all the way back into West Chester. They can repair and long term lease their line from Wawa to Chadds Ford to the West Chester group so they can still run tourist trains. It would be up to Maryland on reviving the Port Deposit-Rising Sun-Nottingham segment. Or does SEPTA or East Penn RR own the Octoraro line in Maryland?

    • @bullfrog1954
      @bullfrog1954 2 месяца назад

      A Media line extension sounds great! Would be an interesting ride! Never really thought about tourist trains on the Media line but-why not! I did a Day Odyssey video in 2016 where I show the line down the road in Media. Not really sure who might own the Nottingham-Port Deposit segment but if I had to guess...well, that portion of the line saw its last train in the mid-50s. At the time operated by PRR which morphed into PC then Conrail now NS...etc. Could the line have been passed down from all those generations of mergers? Maybe NS now? Maybe Cecil County-owned? Maybe something else? Your guess is as good as mine right about now! 👍✌

      Was for me too! First discovered the line in the mid-70s; out of service due to Hurricane Agnes knocking out the NCRY to which Stewartstown connected-plus their "Mighty Mo" loco was stuck in York and couldn't be brought home to Stewartstown due to the inoperation of the NCRY which was finally restored in the 80s and Mighty Mo finally got home! First they had to reopen all crossings as they were paved over after cessation of service in 1972. Service again stopped in Sept 2001 but fortunately restored again, allowing this ride! In fact, the line used this video on their website for a year as advertising! Some free promotion there! Also have vid posted of a Stewartstown caboose ride we took a little before this.

      Great experience for me too! Seems as if all three days of the original were condensed that Sunday: sun, clouds, rain, more sun etc-the perfect Woodstock sampler! There was another "Woodstock" that weekend as well, but to me it'll always be this on the original site-Yasgur's farm, where it belongs! Shame some of the site was built on since.

    Grew up here. Ocean city, Chincoteague, pocomoke,... Nothing but full of lost souls with no desires in life, no dreams of leaving for the big city, those living on the eastern shore fulltime. Surviving all year off what you can scam off the vacationers and Russian exchange students underpaid labor, who come for work. Everyone's an addict or has aids a local ambulance driver once told me

      Sounds kinda bleak! It's actually really like that?? Never would've thought... Did once take a bike ride around the county away from OC and, come to think of it, there is quite a difference between the glitzy tourist areas and the rather plain surrounding areas! Looking back I did notice what might have been some of what you're saying... Wonder what their outlook is...I wish everyone well...

      @@bullfrog1954 one of the most beautiful places.. eastern shores. But yeah. Small towns up and down rt 13. Big $ dif from what visitors pay vs locals. My mom would go down and rent a place for $1500-2k/wk in a rental on the bay. I moved down there and was paying $375/mo. I told her she could pay a full year and go down whenever, saving a lot. Any small town down there is corrupt especially the cops.,. But they leave you alone for the most part def $ spenders. Nosey and yes on something. There is nothing else to do. The paramedic told the truth. Great places to visit in the summer if you can stand the mosquitoes.

    You have brought back childhood memories for me. My grandparents have a farm in Eden and when we would visit OCMD in the off season it looked exactly the same! Glad I brought some memories back for you! OC has changed a bit since this video and quite a bit since the 60s when I went as a kid. Back then one could still go...under the boardwalk! Had to visit at least once a year though occasionally had to miss a year and got disappointed! Now I can visit anytime I want but I still don't! Haven't been since 2019 (vid posted). Back in the 80s we'd ride our bikes from a shopping center outside Berlin to OC, using the old two-lane road when we could though we had to ride over the current drawbridge as no other choice there! Also once rode to Snow Hill from Berlin.
